What is tooth bonding?

Tooth bonding is a multi-layered, trouble-free dental treatment procedure used to repair broken, chipped, cracked and decayed teeth. It is also used to fix or close the unappealing spaces between teeth, to change the color of discolored or stained teeth like teeth whitening, fill up cavities, change the shape and size of teeth and to shield a segment of teeth’s root that has been out in the open due to receded gums. Additionally, it can be used in cosmetic dentistry as a substitute procedure that can temporarily change dental defects and correct them.

How does the tooth bonding process work?

Bonding begins by faintly etching the surface area, then a plastic resin composite is applied on the tooth and trimmed. When the liquid sets, it is completed with the application of another layer of bonding liquid and then sculpted into the desired shape, and polished to match the natural look of the other neighboring teeth. The material can last from 3-10 years.

What types of tooth bonding exist?

There are two types of tooth bonding: direct composite bonding and adhesive bonding. In direct composite bonding, an enamel-like composite or resin is sculpted and shaped to fit with your surrounding teeth. After an additional layer of resin is placed and trimmed, a finish is applied to avoid tooth sensitivity and dislodging.

Adhesive bonding is generally used to secure restorations, bridges, porcelain veneers and crowns. In this process, an adhesive is placed in the restoration along with a high intensity light (for curing) that hardens the adhesive.

A restored tooth does not require extra treatment and special care. Continue to brush your teeth twice a day. The material is stain resistant, but if you notice any stains on your teeth, they can easily be removed by a regular dental cleaning.

A single tooth bonding can be done in one visit to our office and cosmetic specialists; however, complex treatments or more than one tooth bonding may require multiple visits.
