What Are the Different Stages of Gum Disease?

Posted .

Did you know there are different stages of gum disease? Well, it’s true. In fact, there are two stages: gingivitis and periodontitis. Our dentist, Dr. Robin Khan , is happy to tell you all about these stages so you know all there is to know about gum disease in Omaha, Nebraska.

-Gingivitis: Gingivitis is the first stage of gum disease and it develops when you leave plaque on the smile. The plaque irritates the gums and makes them swell, turn a red color and bleed often. Another symptom of gingivitis is persistent bad breath. One treatment for gingivitis is a professional dental cleaning.

-Periodontitis: Periodontitis is the second stage, and it develops when the plaque turns into tartar and infects the smile. During this stage, the tartar makes the gums pull away from the teeth and create pockets of infection. Then, the tartar spreads to the underlying bone and starts to wear it down, making it weak and fragile. This causes loose and lost teeth. Treatments available for this stage of gum disease include scaling and root planing, laser therapy, bone and gum grafts and more.
